Up 4 Celebrations Event Center plans Open House

Just over a year ago Adam and Denise Upmeyer began construction on a new wedding and special event venue in Garner.  About five months into construction the couple’s son announced he was engaged and wanted to get married in the new venue in May. The venue was mostly ready for this celebration in May and now after completing a few more details they want to show the space off to the public.

Renner Wins Third Place Prize at Venture School Statewide Competition

MASON CITY – Caleb Renner of Klemme, took home Third Place at the 2024 University of Iowa’s Venture School Launch Day on June 13, 2024. Ten teams from across the state of Iowa competed in the event which was held at EntreFEST, a two-day entrepreneurial conference in Cedar Rapids. A total of $37,000 in prize money was awarded.

County approves quote for Fountain Repairs

The Hancock County Coard of Supervisors spoke with Jake Schruer from the maintenance department on July 1 about the courthouse fountain’s condition and the costs for repairs. Schreur reported that the quality of the fountain’s piping is difficult to determine. This has made the prospect of replacing the piping altogether a more promising course of action. Patching the piping, meanwhile, is faster, but will begin to fail after only a few years.

Connor Bailey, the new county Conservation Director

After 11 years of service, the Hancock county conservation director, Cale Edwards, has stepped down from his position and has had it filled in by Connor Bailey. The conservation director is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the conservation department, including all managed outdoor areas and staff, as well as managing the annual budget and giving guidance to the county conservation board, which sets policy and governs the department.

Ernst hosts Hancock County town hall meeting

BRITT – U.S. Senator Joni Ernst (R) is on her 99-county “River to River” tour through Iowa. On June 27 Ernst met with about 50 Hancock County constituents in a town hall style meeting at the Britt Public Library. Ernst responded to questions and comments on a variety of topics during the hour-long session.

Military & Ukraine

Senator Ernest emphasized that the United States Army has notdeployed soldiers to fight in the Ukrainian war against Russia.

Another question was about assurance of adequate funding for the U.S. military.

County officials respond to damage caused by flooding

During the June 24 board of supervisors meeting, county engineer Jeremy Purvis reported on the damages caused by the weekend’s flooding from intense rainfall. Hill Ave between 280-290th St, Hill Ave between 260-270th St, Crane Ave between 290-310th St, Crane Ave between 290-280th St, and Grant Ave between 290-310th St were all closed down due to flooding and damages caused by flooding. Purvis hopes that all the listed roads will be clear to open by the end of the week barring any complications.

HCHS Names New Chief Nursing Officer

BRITT – Hancock County Health System (HCHS) is excited to share that Kami Ochoa has accepted the position of Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) of Hancock County Health System, effective July 14, 2024.

Laura Zwiefel, HCHS CEO, continued serving as CNO when she took over at the helm as CEO six

years ago. She resigned the CNO position recently to allow the time required to complete the

increasing responsibilities of both roles.

Iowa Utilities Board approves permit for controversial Summit pipeline

The Iowa Utilities Board gave its approval [Tuesday, June 25] for the controversial Summit Carbon Solutions pipeline and for the company to use eminent domain to acquire landowners’ property.

The company hopes to begin construction next year with the goal of making the pipeline operational in 2026. The pipeline, which would be the largest of its kind anywhere in the world, would carry liquified carbon dioxide from ethanol plants in Iowa and surrounding states to a site in North Dakota, where the company hopes for reconsideration and approval of a previously denied permit.

Governor’s Volunteer Award to Perry Green, Dee Schrodt

GOODELL - Perry Green, Goodell American Legion Post 420 Commander, and Dee Schrodt, American Legion Auxiliary President, received the Governor’s Volunteer Award at the 40thannual Governor’s Volunteer Award Ceremony in Ankeny on June 25. They were presented the award by Governor Kim Reynolds and Lt. Gov. Adam Gregg.

Iowa Veterans Home Volunteer Service Coordinator Laurel Degelau submitted the duo for a group award.

Reynolds issues proclamation for 27 counties impacted by recent widespread flooding

DES MOINES – Gov. Kim Reynolds has issued a proclamation for Buena Vista, Cerro Gordo, Cherokee, Clay, Dickinson, Emmet, Floyd, Fremont, Harrison, Hancock, Humboldt, Kossuth, Lyon, Mills, Monona, O'Brien, Osceola, Palo Alto, Plymouth, Pocahontas, Pottawattamie, Sioux, Webster, Winnebago, Woodbury, Worth and Wright Counties in response to the widespread flooding in Iowa.   

The governor's proclamation allows for the additional targeted suspension of specific regulatory requirements in affected counties to effectively respond to and recover from the effects of this event:
