Doris Bernadine Prohaska was born on June 11, 1936, in Belmond, Iowa, where she was the daughter of Bruce and Dora (Wagner) Peck, and the youngest of ten children. Doris was raised in Belmond and Ventura, Iowa, and Dodge Center, Minnesota, then returned to Iowa for her senior year, where she graduated from Forest City High School in 1954. Following her graduation, Doris moved to Independence, Iowa, to pursue further education at cosmetology school in Waterloo. She then relocated to Mason City, where she worked as a hair stylist and was a model for clothing and shoes, which was also seen on KIMT TV.
On January 8, 1957, Doris married Robert Prohaska at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Duncan. They moved to a farm north of Garner where they started their family. In 1963, they purchased an acreage south of Hayfield, where they lived and farmed for 31 years. Doris also opened a salon business that she ran in the basement of their farmhouse. Doris was also actively involved in the farming operation, taking pride in her roles, which included driving tractors, hauling anhydrous, sourcing parts, and providing meals for the men in the field. Her dedication as a farm wife was evident and she cherished the life they built together.
In 1994, Doris and Robert moved to Garner but maintained a strong connection to their farming roots. They enjoyed spending over 25 winters in Arizona. Doris enjoyed spending time with her family, attending her grandchildren's school activities, gardening, golfing, and reading.
