Tom Wood

Thomas “Tom” L. Wood, 63, of Garner, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, May 27, 2025.

A memorial visitation will be held from 2 to 4 p.m., Sunday, June 1, 2025, at Cataldo Funeral Chapel, 160 E. 4^th St. in Garner. Inurnment will follow the visitation at St. Boniface Catholic Cemetery in Garner with Fr. Andrew Marr officiating. Military rites will be conducted by the Garner Veterans Ceremonial Unit. 

Thomas Lance Wood, the son of Leo and Mary (Sherbon) Wood, was born August 24, 1961, in Vinton, Iowa. He attended school at Clear Lake where he graduated from high school in 1979. Tom worked on the farm with his father after high school and then enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving his country for 3 ½ years. He returned to Iowa, settling in the Ventura area and worked at Clear Lake Bakery. He continued his education at NIACC in 1992 and worked in the heating and cooling business for 30 years in the north Iowa area. Tom loved his kids and grandkids fiercely. He cherished attending all of their events and supporting them any way possible. He was a self-proclaimed Grinch who was an equal opportunity tormentor. However, he truly had a soft spot for others. He always made sure his mom had a beautiful bouquet of dandelions every spring. It’s such a blessing he was able to pass this special tradition on to his grandkids. The race to spot the first robin each spring was something his kids and grandkids looked forward to. He’s incredibly loved and will forever be deeply missed.

He was a member of the Garner VFW.

Tom is survived by his two children, Racine (Tom) Dodd of Garner and Grant Wood of Tucson, AZ; four grandchildren, Carson, Kathleen, Marissa and Erica Dodd; siblings, Wanda Kunzman of Mason City, Frank Wood of Mason City, David (Denise) Wood of Mason City, Jeanne Hefty of Conrad, IA, Alan Wood of Clear Lake, Rose Monson of Clear Lake, Charles (Tina) Wood of Webster, WI, Diana McCombe of Rushville, IL, Dale (Missy) Wood of Rockford, Paul (Lori) Wood of Clear Lake and Annie Wood of Mason City; two sisters-in-law, Donna Wood of Albert Lea, MN and Anne Wood of Cedar Rapids; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by an infant son; his parents; an infant brother, Leo Wood, Jr; three brothers, Steve, John and Dean Wood; and sister-in-law, Mary Lou Wood.
