Corey J. Maurer

Cory Joseph Maurer, 73, of Garner, Iowa, passed away peacefully on May 9, 2025, just days before his 74th birthday.

Born in Spencer, Iowa to Joseph and Virginia Maurer, Cory lived a rich and varied life in places including Phoenix, Arizona, and Boise, Idaho before settling in Garner in 2016. He moved there to be closer to his granddaughters, who quickly became the center of his world.

Cory had a lifelong appreciation for the simple joys: classic cars, Coca-Cola, gardening, horses, and reruns of I Love Lucy, which always brought a smile to his face. He liked to tell tales of his boyhood adventures, including memories with Chico, the fastest horse in Clay County. More than anything, he loved his grandchildren. He lit up in their presence and cherished every moment spent with them.

He was a proud father to Eric Maurer of Mesa, Arizona, and Matthew (Amy) Maurer of Garner, Iowa. His grandchildren—Rhys and Chase of Mesa, and Molly, Katie, Ruby, and Lizzie of Garner—were his pride and joy.

Cory is also survived by his loving sisters from Idaho, Kim Clune (Ken) and Amy Bostrom (Steve), sister-in-law Chris Maurer,  and many nieces and nephews who will remember him fondly. He is also survived by the mother of his sons, Linda Casey (Jim) of Spencer, Iowa. He was a good friend to many who were a gift to him during his illness. He is preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Virginia Maurer, and his brothers Jeffrey and Larry.

Cory will be remembered for his sense of humor, his gift of storytelling, and the deep love he gave so freely to his family. A private memorial will be held by the family. In lieu of flowers, donations in Cory’s name may be made to St. Croix Hospice.
