West Hancock Opens Volleyball Season
BRITT - On Thursday, August 24, the West Hancock volleyball team (0-1) had their season opener against the Lake Mills Bulldogs (1-0), losing the match in three sets.
The Eagles steadily lost by larger deficits, losing the first set 12-25, the second 10-25, and the third 9-25. WH recorded 83 assists in the game, eight kills, two blocks, 12 digs, and four aces.
Whytnie Johnson had two kills, nine assists, one block, and an ace. Payton Whipple had two kills, 17 assists, one dig, and three aces. Damaris Duran had two kills, six assists, and two digs. Charlie Bruggeman recorded one kill and four assists. Faith Steenblock had one kill, 15 assists, and six digs.
Faith Steenblock had six digs and 15 assists. Carlie Johnson had three digs and 15 assists on the day.
Eagles Play in GHV Tournament
The Eagles (0-4) traveled east to play in the Garner-Hayfield-Ventura volleyball tournament on Saturday, August 26. The team went 0-3 on the day. Teams in attendance included West Hancock, GHV, North Iowa, Northwood-Kensett, West Fork, Newman Catholic, North Union, and Rockford.
The Eagles opened with a match against North Iowa (3-0). Scores of the sets are unknown, West Hancock lost in two.
In match two the Eagles played Northwood-Kensett (1-2). The first set was a tight battle to get to 21, with the Vikings getting there first to claim a 21-19 win. Northwood pulled away in the second set for a 21-9 win.
It was a similar story against Rockford (4-1), who beat the Eagles in the first set by a narrow 21-19 score. In set two, the Warriors won 21-12, bouncing the Eagles from tournament play.
