In for a landing...

A sandhill crane lands near the open water at Crystal Lake. According to information from the Iowa Department of Natural Resources website, greater sandhill cranes were extirpated from Iowa in the late 19th century due to habitat loss and overharvest. As wetland habitats returned and population recovered, the sandhills began to return to Iowa.  They were first documented successfully nesting in Iowa in 1992. Sandhill cranes can live up to 35 years in the wild. The cranes are protected in Iowa.
