Joyce K. Dodd, 99, of Garner, was taken to heaven on Thursday, Sept. 28, 2023, at Concord Care Center in Garner with her family gathered by her side.

A memorial visitation will be held from 4 to 6 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 4, 2023, at the Cataldo Funeral Chapel in Garner.  Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, October 5^that Roland Cemetery in Roland, Iowa.

Memorials are preferred to the Garner Volunteer Ambulance Service in memory of Joyce.  Cataldo Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. www.cataldofuneralhome.com

Joyce Karlene Dodd, the daughter of Knute and Jennie (Housken) Stensland, was born December 18, 1923, in Lamberton, MN. The following year the family moved to a farm southeast of Roland, Iowa.  Joyce attended Salem Lutheran Church in Roland where she was confirmed and graduated from Roland High School in 1941. In July of 1942, she was married to Edwin Smith of Ames, and to this union, three children were born: Ellen, Carole, and Gary.

She began her career doing home typing for Ruben Donnelly of Nevada. When her children were all in school, she transferred to their place of business. Due to Edwin’s job, they moved to Garner where she worked for the Hancock County Treasurer’s office. She then returned to Nevada where she worked for the Story County Treasurer’s office, Graphic Forms, and for 18 years in the Iowa State University purchasing department. In 1972, Edwin was fatally injured in an accident at work. In 1978 Joyce married Floyd Dodd of Garner where they resided for many years. They enjoyed wintering in Mission, TX with the many friends they had met over the years. 

She was a member of the United Methodist Church and Esther circle for many years.

Joyce is survived by her daughters, Ellen (Pete) Duffy of Garner and Carole (Ivan) Dodd of Garner; and son, Gary (Nancy) Smith of Overland Park, KS; step-daughter, Jerrie Palmer of Fresno, CA; sister, Fern Ostrem of Ames; seven grandchildren, Kelly (Dave) McCumber of Ankeny, Kerry (Brian) Riordan of Des Moines, Jodie (Jon) Anderson of Clear Lake, Eric (Melissa) Dodd of Grimes, Travis (Katinka) Clementsmith of Temecula, CA, Tara (Jeff) Leinbach of Overland Park, KS and Torry Smith of Aspen, CO; 17 great-grandchildren; 8 great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; first husband, Edwin; second husband, Floyd; sisters, Hazel Beach and Herma Beach; and stepdaughter, Judy Snow.
