Gary R. Maben
Gary R. Maben, 82, of Garner passed away Tuesday, Aug. 3, 2021 at Concord Care Center in Garner. A memorial visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, August 10, 2021 at Cataldo Funeral Chapel, 160 E. 4th St., Garner. Inurnment will be at Concord Township Cemetery in Garner.
The family suggests memorials be directed to the Garner-Hayfield-Ventura High School Greenhouse or Art Department in memory of Gary.
Gary Rae Maben, the son of Orville and (Gladys) Smith, was born January 20, 1939 in Garner. He graduated from Garner High School in 1957 and continued his education at Iowa State Teacher’s College in Cedar Falls, now UNI. Gary returned to Garner to take over the family insurance business after his father Orville suffered a stroke. On September 11, 1965 he married Patricia Irving at the United Methodist Church in Garner. Together, Gary and Pat owned and operated the business until retiring in 2003.
Gary suffered a stroke in 2011 and in 2012 became a resident of Concord Care Center. Gary enjoyed life and had many hobbies including photography, barbequing, gardening and scuba diving to name a few. He was very talented in all of his hobbies.
He was a longtime member of the Garner Lions Club.
Gary is survived by his three grandchildren, Dakotah (Michael) Allison of Mason City, Jeremy Maben of Garner and Jenna (James) DeFazio of Huron, OH; four great grandchildren, Riley Maben and Caleb, Elijah and Evelyn DeFazio; his brother, Duane (Diane) Maben of Texas; two sisters-in-law, Carol (Paul) Anderson of Appleton, WI; and Helen (Thomas) Sammons of Tyler, TX; three nephews, Shane, Shannon and Justin Maben; and a niece, Kaley Maben.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Patricia in 2012; son, Scott Maben; and daughter, Sarah Maben.
