Eagles Win Double Overtime Thriller, 22-20

GARNER -On Friday, Aug. 30, the Garner-Hayfield-Ventura Cardinals (0-1) and the West Hancock Eagles (1-0) faced off for their football season opener. The Eagles won the back-and-forth game in double overtime, 22-20.

The first half was a defensive battle as both teams stayed scoreless going into halftime. The third and fourth quarters saw both teams exchanging touchdowns with successful two-point conversions for a 16-16 score at the end of regulation. 

In the first overtime, both teams scored a touchdown, but neither were able to convert the point-after-attempt. The game came to a close in double overtime when the Eagles scored and converted the PAT. The Cards were able to score but could not convert their PAT. 

The Eagles had 318 yards of offense to the Cards’ 198. West Hancock had 28 yards through the air, converting on 4/6 attempts, good for one touchdown. They rushed for 290 yards on 69 attempts for two touchdowns. The Cards had 76 passing yards on 6/14 passing for one touchdown. They rushed for 121 yards on 24 attempts for two touchdowns. 

Zephyr Jamtgaard did the passing for the Eagles, throwing for 70 yards and a touchdown on 4/6 passing. Zach Beukema was his primary target, completing two catches for 10 yards and a touchdown. Brady Bixel caught a pass for 11 yards and Creighton Kelly caught one for seven yards. 

Bixel led the Eagles in rushing with 102 yards on 31 carries for two touchdowns. Kelly rushed for 86 yards on 16 carries and Gustavo Gomez ran for 74 yards on 13 carries. 

Bixel converted both of the Eagles’ two-point PATs.

Lane Gayken did the passing for GHV, throwing for 76 yards and a touchdown while going 6/14. Nicholas Zrostlik caught three passes for 59 yards and a touchdown. Gage Konz had one catch for 13 yards, while Mark Viera and Zane Black each had a catch for two yards. 

Lucas Kral led the Cards in rushing with 47 yards and two touchdowns on 12 carries. Gayken had one carry for 33 yards, Parker Moritz had 25 yards on seven carries, and Black had four carries for 16 yards. 

Zrostlik also converted the Cards’ two-point PAT.
