Dean Loren Goll, the son of Benjamin and Luvine (Schwartz) Goll, was born August 11, 1925, on a farm southwest of Garner. He attended a rural school near his home and graduated at the age of 16 from Garner High School in 1942. Dean continued his education at Waldorf College in Forest City from 1942 to the spring of 1943, when he enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps. After basic training, he attended tech school and gunnery school. During World War II, he flew 35 missions and was awarded the Air Medal four times. Dean was discharged from the Army in October of 1945 and served in the Army Reserves for ten years. He was very proud of serving his country. He was full of stories from the war and was happy to share them with anyone who would listen.  In the fall of 1964, he went back to Waldorf and graduated in the spring of 1947.
On August 17, 1947, he married Doris LaBonna Ziesmer at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Garner. They started their lives in Garner, where Doris was employed in the county auditor's office and Dean bought a trucking business. In 1955, they purchased farmland west of town. Dean sold the truck line in 1965 and bought farmland east of Garner, which is the present day family farm. In 1999, he and Doris moved into town. One of his greatest joys was his grandkids. He loved spending time with them, talking about what they had going on in their day to day lives.  Dean was very proud of his grandchildren and great grandchildren, he was known to speak highly of them often.
He was a lifetime member of Zion Evangelical and Reformed Church. He served on the church consistory and was an Adult Bible school teacher for many years. Teaching was one of his favorite roles in the church. He was a very faithful servant of the Lord, and teaching others brought him great happiness.
