Josephine DeWaard, 93 of Kanawha, Iowa, passed away Sunday, September 19, 2021 at the Kanawha Community Home.

The funeral service will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 23, 2021 at Kanawha Christian Reformed Church, 129 E 3rdSt, Kanawha with Pastor Brian Hofman officiating. Burial will be at 1:00 PM at Woden Christian Reformed Church Cemetery, rural Woden. The visitation will from 9:30 until time of the funeral on Thursday.

Josephine Louise Margaret the daughter of Fred Sr. and Helen (Hartkopp) Danger was born March 16, 1928 in Alden, Iowa.

Josie attended school in Mason City, her favorite subject was Art. She graduated with the class of 1946.  Following graduation Josie and her sister Lorraine worked as cashiers at Montgomery Wards in Mason City.

Henry and Josie were united in marriage on March 19, 1948, at the Saint James Church in Mason City at two o’clock in the afternoon. To this union three children were born, John, Janice, and James.

Josie was always a hard worker, she had various part time jobs with one being a preschool teacher. She was also a custodian at the middle school and the church.In her free time she enjoyed making holiday decorations, and crafts.

Josie volunteered her time, she helped to organize Congregate Meals in Kanawha, coordinate with Kanawha Labor Day celebration and would have a booth on Main Street with her crafts. She was a Calvinettes leader, was Ladies Aid treasurer for 20 years, andtaught Sunday school off and on for many yearsat the Kanawha Christian Reformed Church. 

Josie is survived by husband of 73 years, Henry DeWaard; children John (Phyllis) DeWaard, and Janice Cartwright; four grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and brother Fred Danger Jr.

Josie is preceded in death by her parents; son James; daughter-in-law Jerry; son-in-law Stephen Cartwright; granddaughter Jayna Fontenot; sister Lorraine; and several brother and sister in laws.
