GHV announces finalists for superintendent

GARNER - Finalists for superintendent at Garner-Hayfield-Ventura were announced in a press release on Monday.

The GHV Board of Education conducted seven screening interviews on Thursday, Jan. 28 with candidates for the District Superintendent position. During the electronic screening interviews, each candidate was asked nine questions to further identify their fit for the job. After the screening interview and further reviewing the candidates’applications, three finalists have been named:

Ken Kasper– Mr. Kasper currently serves as the Shared Superintendent for East Union and Murray School Districts. He has three years of superintendent experience. His prior experience includes serving as a High School Principal and Athletic Director for Alburnett Schools; he also served as an Assistant Principal for Vinton-Shellsburg Schools. With the Forest City School District, Ken served as an Alternative School Coordinator and Student Services Coordinator. He started his teaching career with Ventura Schools as a middle and high school science teacher. 

A few of Mr. Kasper’s accomplishments include expanding operational sharing agreements, improving school culture, financial forecasting, and expanding student programs.

John Howard– Mr. Howard currently serves as the 7-12 Principal for Independence Schools. He has been in that role for the last seven years. He also has Secondary Principal experience (5 years) at Fort Dodge St. Edmond, two years High School Principal at Kingsley-Pierson, eleven years experience as a Spanish teacher and coach at Lynnville-Sully, and one-year teacher/coach experience for the Essex School District.

Some of John’s accomplishments include expanding career and technical programs for students, offering mental health services for students, developing a new pre-apprentice program, and increasing college credit options.

Michael Irvin– Mr. Irvin currently serves as the 6-12 Principal for the Bedford Community School District. He has served the district the last six years and has prior administrative experience as an Assistant Principal and Athletic Director for Clarinda Schools (5 years). His prior experiences include serving as a math teacher and coach for Aplington-Parkersburg and West Central Maynard Schools.

Michael helped develop the Bedford Hall of Fame, increased student ISASP test results, and expanded course offerings. He is also highly involved in his community through service clubs and civic organizations.

Formal interviews are scheduled for Monday, Feb 8. 

The board has identified stakeholders from the district and community that will soon be invited on the formal interview teams. Those individuals will be asked to identify formal interview questions before interviewing the finalists and provide feedback to the board after the formal interviews.

The board looks forward to meeting the candidates in person on Feb. 8 and getting feedback from the interview teams. Each candidate’s family will also be invited to the district for a tour and meetings if they are able to attend. The board hopes to name a new superintendent soon after the Feb. 8 school board meeting.
