Feenstra Pens Open Letter Thanking Iowa Police and Law Enforcement

HULL–U.S. Rep. Randy Feenstra (R-Hull) penned and released an open letter to Iowa police and law enforcement, reiterating his strong support and deepest appreciation for Iowa’s men and women in blue.

The letter reads as follows:

To the men and women of law enforcement:

 Thank you.

Thank you for serving our communities. Thank you for protecting our families. Thank you for doing the thankless work that ensures the safety and security of every Iowan.

To say that a career in law enforcement is a selfless commitment is an understatement. Every day, our police and law enforcement put their lives on the line to keep our families safe and our streets secure. Law and order are unattainable objectives without the brave folks willing to wear the badge.

Tragically, we were all recently reminded of the real risks that law enforcement inherently entails. On September 13th, Officer Kevin Cram – a 10-year veteran of Iowa law enforcement and member of the Algona police department – was senselessly murdered while doing his job. At only 33 years old, he had his entire life ahead of him. I cannot fathom the pain and heartbreak of his family, friends, and the entire Algona community. My prayers remain with them all.

While the grief of losing a loved one and an irreplaceable member of the community never truly heals, we must redouble our efforts to protect the thin blue line.

According to the Fraternal Order of Police, over 270 police officers have been shot in the line of duty this year, including 36 who lost their lives. In my book, one life lost is one too many. That’s why – this Congress – I helped introduce the Protect and Serve Act, which would create federal penalties for criminals who intentionally target and attack law enforcement officers. This disgusting behavior can never be tolerated and must be appropriately punished. Last Congress, I also voted for the Invest to Protect Act to help local and rural police departments recruit, retain, and train law enforcement officers. We must ensure that the men and women who dedicate their lives in service to others have the resources they need to do their jobs.

I can never truly express my deepest appreciation for Iowa law enforcement and their incredible sacrifices. The courage and bravery that our police display on a daily basis is a humbling inspiration. So long as I have the honor to represent Iowa in Congress, I will always be a staunch ally and a strong voice for our police and law enforcement. They deserve nothing less.

Sincerely,

Randy Feenstra

Member of Congress
