Evelyn Hill

BRITT - Evelyn Irene (Newton) Hill, 94, of Britt, passed away Sunday, December 31, 2023 at her home near Britt.  She was surrounded by her children as she was called to heaven by The Lord.

Funeral services for Evelyn Hill will be held at 2:00 PM on Thursday, January 4, 2024 at the Britt Evangelical Free Church with Pastor Stan Johnson officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Britt.

Visitation will be held one hour prior to the services at the church on Thursday.

Evelyn Irene Newton, the daughter of Harry and Edna (Swanson) Newton, was born October 15, 1929 in Humboldt, Iowa.  She graduated from Britt High School in 1948. Evelyn sang in the high school Glee Club and played baritone in the concert band as well as the marching band. She was chosen to represent the Britt band as band queen at the Mason City Band Festival in 1948.  Following graduation she worked as a dental assistant for the local dentist, Dr. H.R. Morgan.

Evelyn married the love of her life, John Hill, on September 3, 1949.  They enjoyed farming southwest of Britt for over 50 years and took great joy in raising their four children.  She was John’s integral partner, planner and helper throughout the years. Even after John’s passing  in 2012, Evelyn remained a steadfast caretaker of their home and farm until she passed.

Evelyn was a homemaker at heart and loved caring for the needs of her family.  She was an excellent cook and was known for her whole wheat bread and buns which she made from fresh ground wheat flour.  Her cooking was a highlight for family gatherings as everyone looked forward to her home cooked meals.  Gardening was also a special joy for her. Her garden produced bountiful vegetables, especially carrots and potatoes.  She also always had a patch of parsley because no meal was complete without a fresh parsley garnish.  She had the gift of encouragement. Many received notes of thanks and love from Evelyn over the years.  These notes are especially cherished by her family.

Evelyn's love for her family was only surpassed by her love for her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.  She was a member of the Britt Evangelical Free Church for over 70 years and helped in various capacities.  She was a Sunday school teacher, taught Bible school for several years, Women’s ministries leader, and youth leader.  She loved singing in the church choir, enjoyed helping with the Awana program, and was a member of the local Community Compassionate Concerns for many years.

Evelyn will be greatly missed by her children: Lorraine (Jim) Amelsberg of Forest City; Connie (Brad) Field of New Richland, Minn; Sharon (Charles) Sweers of Charles City; Jeremy (Denise) Hill of Bondurant; grandchildren and great-grandchildren: Jessica (Chris) Hansen, Amelie and Isaiah; Dave (Val) Amelsberg, Ethan, Ava and Lydia; Cheston (Erin) Field, Isaac, Cadence, and Adalee; Clark (Audra) Field, Adam and Shaun; Carson (Aylssa) Field; Ben Sweers, Tyler and Jadyn; Melissa (Kelly) Eckenrod, Quinn; Johnathan (Lindsey), Jackson and Hannah Hill; sister Lois, brothers Steve and Don, and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

Evelyn is preceded in death by her parents, husband John, sisters Virginia and Janice, brother Merle, son-in-law Tom Anderson and grandson Adam Anderson.
