County Bond Issue Falls Short

The unofficial results of the 2021 City/School elections are in. Hancock County had light voter turnout with only 22 percent of 7,802 registered voters going to the polls.

In addition to city and school elections, Hancock County voters had one bond referendum.

A proposal on whether or not Hancock County should enter into a loan agreement and issue 44.6 million in general obligation bonds for the purpose of building a new county road maintenance building at Britt did not meet the 60 percent super majority approval threshold needed to pass.

The vote was 915 (55.03%) in favor and 747 (44.97%) votes against.

The proposed facility had an estimated cost of $4.6 million and would have replaces the original 1936 building and 1959 maintenance shop currently being used at Britt.

Supervisor Gary Rayhons said that the board will likely review their options going forward.
