Cards Cruise to Regional Semifinals

Garner – The GHV girls basketball team (9-13) played in the Class 3A Regional Quarterfinals on Saturday, February 11th against Clarion-Goldfield-Dows (10-12), winning the game by a score of 61-39. 

 

The Cards got off to a fast start, claiming a five-point lead by the end of the first period and adding six more to the lead in the second. GHV went into halftime leading by a score of 25-14. The game stayed steady through the third before a 22-10 scoring edge in the fourth sealed a decided win for the Cards.

 

GHV shot 36 percent (21/58) from the field while making 33 percent (8/24) from the three, and 65 percent (11/17) from the free-throw line. 

 

They snagged 20 offensive and 29 defensive rebounds. The Cards also secured nine assists, three steals, and six blocks.

 

Morgan Krein led the Cardinal attack with 18 points on 7/19 shooting and cashing in on 4/9 three pointers. Krein also claimed nine rebounds with one block.

 

Rebecca Hejlik had a 12-point, 12-rebound double-double. She did it on 3/4 shooting in the field while making 6/8 free-throw attempts. She had four offensive and eight defensive rebounds to go with three assists and a steal.

 

Jenna Pringnitz scored 13 points, making 5/10 shots on the floor with 3/8 coming from behind the arch. Pringnitz also took in three rebounds, two steals, an assist, and a block.

 

Gretta Gouge had eight points and eight rebounds with four boards coming on each end of the court. She also had an assist and a block. 

 

Aly Derr scored six points to go with four rebounds, four assists, and three blocks.

 

Valarie Welsh scored four points and took in two rebounds. 

 

The Cards will return to action on February 15th at 7:00 PM when they hit the road to take on Estherville Lincoln Central (22-0) for the Class 3A Region 1 semifinal game. Winner of that game will play for the chance to make the state tournament.
